 Styles & Materials:

There are two primary styles of chain mail, butted & riveted.  Butted mail was for years virtually the only chain mail available to the re-enactment community and only the most dedicated re-enactors would spend the scores of hours need to make themselves a butted mail shirt.  Now, thanks to VSE, butted mail is inexpensive and readily available to all.  Butted mail is available in several ring sizes from 6mm to 10mm and is made from galvanized, oil blackened or stainless steel.

Riveted mail is more historically correct and much more durable than butted mail.  However, because of the incredible amount of labor involved in its manufacture, it was rarely seen outside of museums until a few years ago.  Due to the amount of time it takes to manufacture, riveted mail is more expensive than butted mail, selling for much the same price as butted mail sold for five years ago.  Riveted mail is available in ring sizes from 8mm to 14mm.  In addition to the standard round wire rings it is available in a the lighter weight flat wire rings and the most historically accurate of all chain mail the flat wedge riveted ring.  Riveted mail is made from several materials including galvanized or oil blackened steel, aluminum and stainless steel.
